We offer teacher professional development for teachers of toddlers all the way through principal certification and everything in between. We seek to be the gateway for educators to gain access to the world-class research and practices that can only be found at Rice University. From one-day events to week-long institutes and from face-to-face to online, we are here to support and equip those serving students. Through both our Education Department and School Literacy & Culture departments, we provide programming for current and future teachers, parents, and students with a focus on student-centered learning and an embrace of our ever-changing, global society.
For nearly three decades, School Literacy and Culture (SLC) has promoted effective teaching through rigorous professional education initiatives that emphasize early literacy, child development, writing and culture. Our work is based on the following guiding principles:
+ Change requires teachers to become part of a professional learning community that places inquiry at its center.
+ Teachers learn best when they can use their own classroom experience to examine their beliefs and practices.
+ Issues of equity must permeate the fabric of professional development.
+ To accomplish these goals we have multiple programs tiered to meet teachers’, schools’, and districts’ varied needs.
Additionally, we bring that knowledge not only to teachers but directly to students through Creative Writing Camp held at campuses across the Houston area each summer.
